Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

After 2/3 years of graduation, the graduates will have the ability to:

1. Analyse, design and implement solutions in the field of Information Science and

Engineering and adapt to changes in technology by self-learning.

2. Work effectively as an individual and in a team, exhibiting leadership qualities to

meet the goals of the organization.

3. Keep abreast with the technology and pursue higher education.

Program Outcomes (PO’s)

Engineering Graduates will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

Program specific Outcomes (PSO’s)

ISE graduates will be able to:

  1. Analyze, design, develop and test software solutions using structured and object oriented approach.
  2. Design, develop and optimize solutions for information systems employing fundamentals of system hardware & software, graph theory, finite automata, data storage and communication networks.

About the Course Information Science / Technology is the buzzword today in all walks of life be it space or down to agriculture. These days we need connectivity of data across the globe and we need it at the click of the mouse. That is the challenge Information Technology has to meet. We need more sophistication in the way we can handle data and obtain information. Some critical application include:

  • Office automation & accounting
  • Expert systems for diagnostics
  • Monitoring for Live projects
  • Online exams, results & Decision support systems

Information Science professionals are among the fastest growing and highest paying jobs in the economy. The course attracts people with interest in developing the skills like Analytical, Mathematical, Managerial, Communication, Creative Problem solving and the technical competency. Core Areas of study includes; Operating systems, Systems Software, Application software, Networking, Programming languages, Design and analysis of algorithms, decision support systems, Database Management, File Structures, ERP and MIS.

About the Department:

Since inception in 2001, the Information Science Department at BNMIT forged a path of innovative information technology research and teaching at the undergraduate level.

“Excellence in teaching and mentoring is highly prized in our department”.

Hence, the department has a diverse community of scholars engaged in all aspects of research, teaching and mentoring in information science headed by Dr. Surabhi Narayan.  The department has a diverse community of faculty engaged in all aspects of research, teaching and mentoring of students.  The faculty is encouraged to develop new and effective ways of teaching information science and to lead in the development of new curricular and materials for teaching.  Undergraduate students work closely with faculty and with one another as team.  We remain unique in the extent to which undergraduates create and take part in various technical programs and author research papers. The entire campus is WiFi connected & provided for academic and research work. We make sure that they have ample opportunity to exercise their interests.

The Department has conducted various workshops, seminars and conferences under the banner of Association of Computer Science & Information Science. Special coaching classes are conducted for the benefit of weak students. Remedial classes also conducted for the failed students.

Also, coaching classes are arranged for the competitive examinations. All the outgoing students every year are welcomed into Alumni’s fold which contains addresses, Telephone numbers and E-mail Ids of all outgoing students.  Most of the Alumni have enrolled as life-members.

About Head of the Department:  

kavitha.c Dr. Surabhi Narayan, the head of the department has teaching and research experience of over 14 years in the field of computer science and engineering. She has obtained her B.E and M.Tech from Mysore University, and Ph.D from VTU. She has about 08 publications in national and international journals and conferences. She is a Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education and Life Member of Computer society of India.

7. Research activities: R & D center – The Research scholars and faculty members are utilizing CS & E Research and Development centre and actively involved in research activities and have received various grants from different organizations. The students and staff are encouraged to participate in research work. Some of the areas where research has been carried out by the faculties are Data Mining, Computer Networks and Information Security & Image Processing. 8. Research Grants: Nil 9.   • One week faculty development program on “Artificial Intelligence and its Applications” from 9th to 13th Jan 2017, conducted by department of ISE, BNMIT.
  • One week faculty development program on “Cloud Computing” from 11th to 16th July 2016,conducted by department of ISE, BNMIT.
  • One week faculty development program on “IT Infrastructure Management Services” from 5th to 9th January 2015,conducted by department of ISE, BNMIT in association with Engineering Staff College of India, Hyderabad.
  • A Talk on “Can You Still Work In Tech If You Can’t Code? – Various Career Options For An Engineering Graduate” by Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni Head, Business Development Aurus Network, Bangalore Former Product Manager at Flipkart, Bangalore on 10/4/2014.
  • 5th International Conference on Signal and Image Processing (ICSIP) was held from January 8th -10th , 2014 (In association with department of Computer Science & Engineering, BNMIT).
  • A Talk on “Social Media & Inmemory Computing” by T.V.Nagarajan, Project Manager, HP Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore  on 27th April 2013.
  • A Talk on “What Really Matters – After Graduation” by Mr. Gangadhar Salimath, Quality Assurance Manager, Infosys, Bangalore on 9th Octobor 2013.

10. Staff Achievements & Awards  The staff of our department has also many awards and achievements to their credit in adminstration, academics, sports and fine arts.

  • Smt. Saritha Chakrasali was instrumental in coordinating faculty development workshops and seminars. She has completed Continuing Education Course on Cryptography and Network Security with Overall performance grade of S (outstanding) and Intelligent Agents with Overall performance grade of A at IISc, Bangalore. She has topped the Bangalore University in Bachelor of Technology and received the Certificate of Commendation for her final year project from Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, IISc. She has also received the Merit Certificate in recognition of the high position secured in the list of meritorious candidates qualifying for awards from Govt. of Karnataka, National Scholarship Scheme.

Many Students have actively partcipated and won serval prizes in various technical Competitions held at state and national level.

  • Aparna B.V. has secured 6th rank in VTU examinations 2015.
  • Akshay Anand awarded Dr. MS Subbulakshmi Fellowship Award in Music.
  • Our students have carried out a number of projects independently beyond the academic curriculum. Akshay H Pai is an outstanding student from ISE department. He has been one of the main coordinators in conducting Inter college fests like TATVA. Further he was an active participant in open source technology and free software Movement Karnataka. He was the Hacker Earth campus evangelist from BNMIT.
  • Akshay was a part of the team involved in building a 64 node super computer cluster using Raspberry Pi processors under the guidance of Dr. Krishnamurthy G N. He is a technical blogger and technical writer. He has taken part in PESIT fest named INCITO (Student idea hackathon), CSI student convention held in Tumkur, attended SAP Techniversity based on SAP technology, attended pycon 2013 – the national python conference. Akshay has also voluntarily completed various mini projects related to system resources, steganography and SIC assembler.
  • Students have participated in the “Microsoft Go Achive Alive Challenge” national level contest bagging the first place in Karnataka and fourth position among colleges from all over India.
  • Hrishikesh, Aditya, Chaitanya and Jayanth the students of the 2012 passed out, received certificate of achievement in the coding contest ACM ICPC-2010
  • Anvitha, Jayanth Silesh and Rashmi the students of the 2012 passed out, presented a apper at the international conference on Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT 2012) on may 19th, 2012 and awarded the best paper in student category.
  • Santhosh M. H. Student of 2009 batch has attended International Astronomical Youth Campus (IAYC) 2012, organised by International Workshop for Astronomy at Eichendorf, Germany from 5th to 25th August 2012. He was one among the two Indians selected to attend the camp.
  • Sukriti Sharma, Apurva V.S and Vidya Meenakshi K of final year project batch have won the Best Project Award for the third edition of JED-I in the computing division for the project “Traffic Density Estimation using SVM Classifier” guided by Smt. Saritha Chakrasali at IISc which included a cash prize of Rs 75,000/-.
  • A group of students of current 2014 pre final year batch is involved in design and development of Raspberry Pi Super Computer under the sponsorship of BNMIT management to become more exposure to technical and academic skills apart from carrying out their final year project. The  sponsorship amount is Rs. 3,50000/-.
