Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

After 2/3 years of graduation, the students of Mechanical Engineering department shall have ability to:

  • Apply principles of mathematics, science and Mechanical engineering to design Mechanical systems and applications in industry.
  • Apply knowledge of Mechanical engineering to solve problems of social relevance with concern for environment.
  • Work with professional ethics as individuals and as team members in multidisciplinary projects demonstrating creativity and leadership.
  • Pursue higher education and research in advanced technology.


Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

Mechanical engineering program prepares graduates:

  • To model, analyze, design and realize physical systems, components or process by applying principles of thermal engineering, machine design, mechatronics and control engineering
  • To work professionally in industries or as an entrepreneur, by applying manufacturing and management practices.


Program Outcomes (POs)

Engineering graduates will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions, using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

About the Course:

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest amoung engineering disciplines. The application base of Mechanical engineering field of study is extremely broad and diverse and the scope of Mechanical engineering is continuously expanding beyond its traditional boundaries. Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics, materials science and mathematics to the design, development, research, evaluation, manufacture, installation, testing, operation, maintenance and management of Mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product life-cycle management to design, analyze and develop manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, and others. Mechanical engineers are employed in automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, electronic, industrial machinery, manufacturing, mining, oceanographic, petroleum, pharmaceutical, power, printing, publishing, and textile industries. Mechanical engineers use engineering principles to provide efficient solutions for the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plants, machinery or vehicles. Mechanical engineers are focusing their attention towards new areas of research such as nanotechnology, development of composite materials, biomedical applications, environmental conservation, etc. To summarize, the field of Mechanical engineering offers a wide bouquet of job options to students, who are looking for a stable and stimulating career.

About the Department:

The Mechanical engineering branch was started in the academic year 2011-2012. All the laboratories have been established with full fledged facilities.  The department has a team of  well qualified staff members, with a blend of industrial and academic experience. Faculty members with Masters and Doctorate degrees, having specialization in machine design, thermal engineering, product design and maintenance engineering are rendering their service to academics.

The department is committed to provide the students, technical expertise in theoretical, computational and practical methods, to the analyse, solve and meet challenges in Mechanical engineering field. Towards achieving this goal, the department is fully equipped with the required facilities for effective delivery of lectures, full fledged computational and laboratory facilities. A committed team of well qualified teaching and well trained supporting staff are involved in the delivery of theory and laboratory classes.

Apart from class room teaching, students are encouraged to carry out simple projects, to get hands on training on what they learn in theory subjects. Industrial visits and guest lectures by experts of repute from industries/academia are arranged on regular basis, to enhance learning and expose the students to latest happenings in the field of Mechanical engineering.

About Head of the Department:

ME_HOD

The department is headed by Dr Mukesh Patil. He has a teaching experience of 16 years in the field of Mechanical engineering. He obtained his B.E. degree from Mysore University. He is a Gold medalist in M.Tech from VTU, Belagavi. He obtained his Ph.D. from VTU, Belagavi in thermal engineering under the guidance of Dr.K.N.Seetharamu/ Dr.Pradeep G. Hegde. He is actively involved in research activities in the field of thermal engineering. He has published 04 research papers in international journals and has presented papers in 02 international conferences. His areas of interest include thermodynamics, heat transfer, porous materials, fluidics and energy engineering.

About the Faculty Members:

The department has a committed team of well qualified teaching staff. The team of faculty comprises of staff members with a blend of industry and academic experience. Faculty members with  masters degree qualification having specialization in machine design, thermal engineering, product design and maintenance engineering are at service.  The faculty members are actively involved in delivering theory classes and conducting practical classes, ensuring effective transfer of knowledge in order to equip the students with theoretical, computational and practical methods of analysis/understanding in Mechanical engineering.

NewGen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC)

The NewGen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (NewGen IEDC) is being promoted in educational institutions to develop institutional mechanism to create entrepreneurial culture in S&T academic institutions and to foster techno-entrepreneurship for generation of wealth and employment by S&T persons. The NewGen IEDCs are established in academic institutions (science colleges, engineering colleges, universities, management institutes) having requisite expertise and infrastructure.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

                    • Department has signed MoU with Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Renewable Energy and Development (MGIRED) for sustained activities in the area of renewable energy.
                    • Department has signed  MoU  with Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd.  for establishing state of the art  ‘BNMIT-Toyota Centre of Excellence’. The purpose of this MoU is to train students hands-on in the automotive domain using the engine and transmission systems of Toyota Innova.
                    • In addition to this, Toyota Kirloskar Motors Pvt. Ltd. has also donated Toyota Fortuner Frame and Engine Transmission Assembly along with breaking (ABS), suspension, Automatic drive system and steering mechanism as a second edition to the existing centre of excellence. this added 4-WD mechanism shall enhance the value and content of the centre

BNMIT-Toyota Centre of Excellence

BNM Institute of Technology has association with Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. to develop center of excellence. Here the students are trained in assembling and dismantling the parts of Toyota Innova four stroke diesel engine with transmission system. Students are also exposed to gain the practical knowledge about the working principle of engine, gear engagement and transmission system through the cut section assembly of four stroke engine with transmission system. The BNMIT-Toyota center of excellence provides opportunities for students to understand the needs of industry by analyzing the design and manufacturing methods of engine components. In future, proposal the Toyota center of excellence will be added with new Fortuner 4WD automatic transmission system with complete chassis, suspension and braking system.

Mechanical Virtual Labs

Virtual Labs is an innovative program that lets you interact with an Laboratory experiments  discovering its principles using ICT . Three Virtual Labs Shall be added in the first phase. The virtual lab accessibility  requires internet connectivity for remote access.

IEI-BNMIT Students’ Chapter

IEI Students’ Chapter under Mechanical Division was inaugurated on 22nd February 2017. The program was inaugurated by Chief Guest   Er. Jasmail Singh, Honorary Secretary, IEI, Karnataka State Centre.  Dr. Enti Ranga Reddy, Council Member, IEI, Mechanical Engineering Division Karnataka State Centre was the guest of honour.  Sri. Narayan Rao R. Manaay, Secretary, BNMEI presided the event. Prof. T. J Ramamurthy, Director, BNMIT. Dr. Krishnamurthy G.N, Principal, BNMIT, graced the occasion.

The Students’ Chapter will extend a support for the development of socio-techno intellectual qualities of its members as well as encourage to enhance their urge for knowledge in a disciplined and guided system. BNM Association of Mechanical Engineers (BAME) was formed in the year 2016 to support student involvement and engagement in co-curricular activities. BAME provides opportunities for development of leadership quality for students by inculcating event management skills, ability to work in teams and excel in over all personality development.
